What do we talk about when we talk about participation? In what ways do we ask  students to contribute in our classes, and how do we encourage, structure, and evaluate those contributions? These were some of the questions guiding the TLC Workshop on Participation earlier this semester, and our subsequent call for contributors to a TLC series about the ways we, as instructors, might “rethink” participation to make it more inclusive, meaningful, and equitable.  The accompanying posts represent just a few of the strategies TLC staff have found useful in their own classes—from “scaffolding” participation or assigning participator “roles,” to promoting peer interaction through a course blog, to making creative use of the classroom space.
